Visitors?

If you live in Sydney and plan a holiday on the Central Coast (an hour away) someone will probably say: ‘Nice…we might come up for the day.’ Often it is fun to catch up with friends on holidays.
When you are staying on a remote island off the coast of north west Scotland you don’t expect visitors to just pop up for the day. However, due to the wonders of social media an 0ppo (Navy colleague) from Richard’s division at Naval College, made contact. He and his wife are currently taking a year off and had mentioned on messenger that they too were in the Lake District as we passed through a few of weeks ago. We suggested that if they made it to Skye, they should drop in for a cup of tea. This week they contacted us saying they would love to catch up recognising (in their words), ‘unless you’re in one of the most remote places in the world because you’re trying to avoid Aussies’.
After a bit of planning we met in Portree, enjoyed a scenic two hour walk, had lunch and then they were on their way again. They are a very impressive young couple. As they travel Wes is completing a Masters in Software Engineering through Oxford University and his wife Kerryn has a PhD in Oceanography. They are travelling and living out of a converted 1984 VW van. Sounds fun, but Wes’s engineering skills are often tested by mechanical challenges.
How wonderful that with social media and modern communication no matter where you travel in the world someone might say; ‘Nice… we might come up for the day.’
